Or maybe first semester didn't go as well as you had wanted. Perhaps you need new study tips. Here are some ways to start your classes off on the right foot - from one student to another.

Read your syllabus. Obviously you should try to avoid missing class, but the worst time to realize you're allotted 2 absences is after your third. I personally write down my allowed absences for each class in the beginning of my planner, and I can then also mark down if I miss one of my classes. If you're sick or there's a family emergency, reach out to your professor and let them know. They're not going to have any sympathy if you just don't show up. You should also write down deadlines for assignments and quizzes, so you're not stuck writing a seven page essay you didn't know existed the night before it's due.

Similarly, be familiar with your resources. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. A professor is going to be a lot more sympathetic to a student who asks for help than one who doesn't. Office hours exist for a reason, don't be afraid to go in. There are other options as well - there's tutoring in the residence halls, as well as a variety of options in the library. Everyone here wants you to succeed. If you need extra help, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Accessibility Resource Center. For a list of other academic resources, click here. For Mental Health Resources at UWM, click here.

Participate. It'll help your grade, and it'll most likely make you care more.

Sit in the front. I know you don't want to. But in all honesty, this is one of the best ways to make sure you're paying attention and learning - you're paying to go here after all. Also, the professor will know who you are - trust me, that helps.

Find an organization method that works for you. This goes back to the syllabus and writing things down. I personally use a planner and a huge calendar on my wall. But there are endless options - your Outlook calendar, a journal, a notepad, even post-its! Make it fun - buy colored pens and highlighters. I even knew someone who used stickers, just because it helped them stay organized! Pinterest can be your friend with this tip. If you'd prefer to use your phone, experiment with different apps until you find one you like, and the reminders could help you as well!

Find the best place for you to study. Whether it be the library, your room, outdoors, Colectivo, or one of the hidden corners of campus, find the place that makes you happiest and helps you to concentrate. Not everyone thrives in the same study environment, and that's okay. Personally, I need a quiet space that isn't where I live to be able to work well. Find what works for you and do it.

Start a study group. It may be tempting to hide in the back corner of your class and ignore everyone, but don't. If you find a friend in each of your classes, you're bound to be happier about attending. If you're someone who does well when studying with others, start a study group and help each other out!

Find a way to stay motivated. Reward yourself for getting work done. Maybe you let yourself watch a Netflix episode after working for an hour. Maybe you start a daily accomplishment journal - you write down the little things you do to realize how much you are actually accomplishing. Maybe after working for 45 minutes, you get to go outside for a 5 minute walk. Or, you put a gummy bear on each new paragraph. Again, find something that works best for you. It'll help!

Try a new club. If it doesn't work out, you don't have to commit, but try to find something new and interesting to do - it can even be a job! There's a ton of clubs here at UWM! Handshake is a great resource if you're looking for a job.

Declutter - and maybe redecorate! If you're feeling bored of your room, try reorganizing or redecorating to get a fresh new start! I completely reorganized my room at the beginning of second semester, and it was a small but nice change and definitely a breath of fresh air.

Take breaks. If you're getting angry or frustrated, you're not making any progress and there's no point being stuck on something for an hour. Take a ten minute break, grab a snack. Once your head is clear, go back to your task and try again. If you're still stuck, try approaching the problem in a new way, attempting a different assignment, or asking for help.

Move. Now, I know exercise isn't everyone's thing, but it really does help with stress! Find an unorthodox way to get active - go for a walk, throw a frisbee, go rock-climbing, dance, bike, laser tag - even playing an instrument counts!

Nutrition and sleep. It's not always the easiest thing, but everyone preaches it for a reason. Even if you can't get your full eight hours every night, make sure you do before big tests and presentations. It helps with stress more than you realize. Make sure to take care of yourself - it's so important. No one will judge you for bringing an apple or granola bar to class if you forgot breakfast or need an extra snack. Water helps more than you think - and there are a ton of places you can get a free water bottle on campus, such as the LGBT Resource Center located in the Union.

Not everything works for everyone, so if you have any of your own tips, please let us know! Good luck with second semester!Kassidy Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18245946435272231982noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-48162632169456090772019-01-15T14:02:00.000-06:002019-01-15T14:03:06.232-06:002019 Bucket ListLiving in a city, there are always new things to try! We've compiled a list of activities for a UWM student that will help you to experience Milwaukee - a 2019 Bucket List - one that you can actually complete.

1. Go out on the water - we're lucky to live right next to such a great lake, as well as the Milwaukee River! Take advantage of it and go kayaking, on a boat tour, or even scuba dive to see shipwrecks. There are far more things to do than just going to Bradford - but that's fine too!

2. Walk or bike the Oak Leaf Trail or the Milwaukee Riverwalk - if you don't have your own bike, you can rent a Bublr bike, otherwise take a walk along the Oak Leaf Trail - you can take it to Shorewood, the Lakefront Colectivo, Downtown - it's the perfect segue into other activities in your day! And the Milwaukee Riverwalk is an amazing way to explore downtown!

3. The Milwaukee Pierhead Lighthouse - while you're downtown, head here for some fantastic photo opportunities!

4. Go rock climbing at Adventure Rock - rock climbing is a ton of fun, and it's good for you, so grab some friends or go alone and maybe you'll find your new favorite hobby! Adventure Rock is great for newcomers, as well as those who have been rock climbing for a long time. It's right across from Riverview Residence Hall, so you can even take the shuttle there.

5. Visit the Milwaukee Public Market - there's a variety of different vendors here, and it has a super cool atmosphere! This is also located in the Historic Third Ward, so it's perfect if you're exploring and need a break.

6. Try Kopp's Frozen Custard - rumored to be the best, and with crazy flavors, it's definitely worth a visit!

7. Go to a museum - this is perfect for a rainy or snowy day. Whether it be the Public Museum, the Art Museum, Discovery World, the Harley Davidson Museum, the Domes, or some other museum entirely, there are a ton of options for when you want to go out - but also stay in.

8. Check out the Milwaukee Film Festival - this is one of my favorite times of the year. Pro tip: for each shift you volunteer, you get a free pass into the Film Festival. There's always plenty of diverse and amazing works playing, you're sure to find one you like! Bonus points for this one because you also get to experience the beautiful Oriental Theatre.

9. If you need a break from Milwaukee...Escape MKE - if you've ever wanted to be a spy, this is perfect for you. Take a group of friends (or family), choose from a variety of missions, and see if you can escape the room.

10. Try new restaurants - this one seems pretty simple, but Milwaukee has a lot of unique and diverse cuisine and restaurants that you should definitely try out - Mader's, AJ Bombers, and the Waterfront Deli are all great choices! Mader's has had a lot of celebrity guests, from Katy Perry to John F Kennedy, and if you sit on the second floor of the Waterfront Deli, they send your food up in a basket on a dumbwaiter!

11. Go Hang Gliding - everyone seems to talk about skydiving, but I've always wanted to try hang gliding! There are a few different places around Milwaukee that offer you the opportunity to fly (or at least feel like you are), so research which one is best for you and go!

Let us know when you complete any of the activities and what you think! If you have any other ideas, be sure to tell us! Enjoy your next year in Milwaukee!

On September 1st, you can participate in Escape Room in the Third Ward! This event runs from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Also on September 1st is the Campus Campout! This runs from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. on the Sandburg Lawn! With free s'mores, hammocks, and yard games, there's no way to go wrong! If you have a guitar, feel free to bring it with.

From 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 2nd there's free boat tours! It's a perfect time to go out on the water with friends before it gets too cold to. These fill up fast, so make sure to get your spot! Registration starts a half hour before each tour.

To coincide with the IKEA Trip is a Target Trip! This is my personal favorite at Fall Welcome! Buses begin loading at 9:30 p.m. outside of Sandburg on September 2nd. Be sure to go and get discounts and free snacks! This is perfect if you forgot to bring something to college, thought of something else you need, or just want to look around.

On September 3rd, be sure to check out the Brewers game! Transportation is provided and it's free, so be sure to show up in your Brewers or MKE gear!

If sports aren't your thing, also on September 3rd is the trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum! This is one of my personal favorite spots in Milwaukee, and again, it's free! The buses depart from the Union at 1:00 p.m., so make sure to get there at 12:30 or earlier.

On September 7th is the Panther Street Festival! This is as fun as it sounds, with free food (are you noticing a trend?), activities, and more, and is followed by Pantherfest featuring Khalid!

Head to the Milwaukee Zoo on September 8th! Space is limited, so make sure to show up early!

This is only a small list of all the great things we have to offer during Fall Welcome! Make sure to check out the full list, and let us know your favorites!

Most likely, your move-in date and time is on August 28th, 29th, or 30th. You can view your assigned move-in date and time by going into your myHousing portal, and viewing your housing assignment. To make the process run as smoothly as possible, we ask that you don't show up more than 15 minutes early, and no more than 45 minutes late.

Here at UWM, we take safety very seriously - I would like to point out that we do have a GuestPass system. The exception to this system will be when you move in. Your helpers/guests won't need a Guest Pass unless if they are entering the building past 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in pre-registering for a Guest Pass, here is the link!

I know the thought of move in can be very stressful for incoming students and their families, but I promise the process is extremely efficient! There are volunteers there to help you all along the way, directing you on where to go and there for you to ask any questions to.

If you are living in Cambridge Commons, here is a link to more detailed information to that move-in process. If you are living in Sandburg, you can access that information here. Both of these links will provide directions and more!

Below are some insider tips and tricks to help you out with move-in!

If possible, pack in things that can stack. We have yellow carts that are available for you to use, then a volunteer will use giant cling wrap to hold it together, thus minimizing the amount of trips you need to take!

If you have not yet ordered a loft but decide you want one once you have moved in, there is a table in the lobby of the building you can visit to request this loft. Otherwise, throughout the year you can request to have a loft given to you or taken away by filling out a work order.

Due to our parking garages, trailers and extended pick-up trucks most likely will not fit. Each family is allotted two vehicle spaces in the parking garage - you are not charged for parking during move-in!

If you're worried about forgetting something - don't be! Someone can always bring and/or send any items you may have forgotten. We even have an awesome Target Trip and an IKEA Trip during Fall Welcome, which is another great option if you think of something else you need or want! You may even get a discount. 😉

Have fun! Be excited! You're moving onto college and into your new home!

Today, August 2nd, is the kick off to the Wisconsin State Fair! If you're in the Milwaukee area - or don't mind the drive - below, I'll highlight some of the great events you can check out!

The State Fair has a variety of free stages with entertainment, and with acts from comedians to jugglers, it's a great family-friendly option!

Make sure to check out the Main Stage that has some pretty amazing artists on the line-up - from Alice Cooper to Casting Crowns, and TLC to Foreigner, you're almost guaranteed to find someone you love!

There are more than 30 free stages of entertainment at the Wisconsin State Fair, and the Associated Bank Amphitheater is the Fair's largest free stage, and has some great acts as well - I'll be sure to go see Here Come the Mummies for a second time!

The Fair has a variety of attractions other than music - there's art displays for your inner creative genius, a variety of rides, and the Barnyard if you need your cute animal fix.

While you're there, make sure to grab some great fair food - there are more than 50 vendors with reduced prices. I'll be sure to stop by and grab some food on a stick, and a cream puff!

For more detailed information on the Wisconsin State Fair, don't hesitate to check out their website, and let us know what you're most excited about!
Some of our favorite beaches are all within walking distance - Atwater, Bradford, and McKinley.

Atwater Beach is located just north of UWM in Shorewood. Other than a beach, it offers beautiful views and a playground, and it's a little bit quieter than Bradford Beach, so it's a perfect choice if your family is visiting.

Bradford Beach is a great place to go and hang out with your friends - there's always something to do! Whether you want to go play volleyball, swim, eat lunch, or all three, you're sure to have a great time. Bradford even has a small restaurant serving burgers, ice cream, drinks, and more, so you're sure to have a good day! Each year, UWM students go and help to clean Bradford Beach - show your love and make sure to participate!

If you continue going south past Bradford, you'll find the slightly smaller McKinley Beach close to downtown! Here you can go out on a pier, use the picnic areas, or nearby you can rent jet skis and scooters.

No matter where you go, you'll have fun being so close to the lake!

Kassidy Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18245946435272231982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-12708006774943608682018-07-11T18:26:00.000-05:002018-07-11T18:26:29.201-05:00Food Around UWMMilwaukee is home to plenty of great restuarants, no matter what you're in the mood for! UWM is nestled between quite a few gems - here are just a few you should make sure to visit!

BelAir Cantina has two locations in Milwaukee, and is a perfect choice for $2 tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays! They also have a ton of different options, from burrito bowls to tamales. Not to mention, BelAir is a great environment to hang out with friends.

If you're leaning towards Greek, check out Oakland Gyros - just a short walk from campus and open until 3 a.m., you can get a ton of great food here without spending too much money!

Maybe you prefer a classic diner - then Ma Fischer's is perfect for you! Open 24/7, this restaurant has a ton of comfort food if you're missing your parent's home-cooked meals. Or maybe you just got done seeing a movie at the beautiful Oriental Theater, and Ma Fischer's is just down the road. Either way, if you find your way here, you won't be disappointed with their large servings and variety of food to choose from.

If you're on Downer, make sure to check out Cafe Hollander. As a grand cafe with award winning food, you're almost guaranteed to find something you love! With foods such as chocolate dipped waffles and jalapeno bbq burgers, I'd be surprised if you don't go back!

One of my personal favorites is Beans & Barley - just a few minutes walk from Cambridge (or, you can take the shuttle and get off at Kenilworth), they use local ingredients and also offer a variety of vegan and vegetarian options - it tastes good, and is good for you!

If you're just looking for coffee, be sure to check out Colectivo! With locations all over the city, you're sure to find one to pick up your daily coffee or tea. They also have smoothies, baked goods, and food, and it's locally owned and operated!

Or, if you're running out of money and looking for a great place that takes meal plan, be sure to check out Ian's Pizza! Your meal plan works for dine-in and delivery, so whether you want classic cheese or one of their famous specialty pizza's, you're in luck! Through the GET platform, you can access a full list of all restaurants that take your UWM Meal Plan or Gold Account - but remember, you won't get the 50% discount that you get at the Cafe's and Palm Gardens.

These are just a few of the amazing places to eat around UW - Milwaukee. Be sure to try them out, and let us know your favorites!Kassidy Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18245946435272231982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-65651762247154374122018-07-09T16:09:00.001-05:002018-07-09T16:09:01.039-05:00Move In!Starting July 2nd, the UWM Move In Guide is available! This will be mailed to students, but is also available online. It will have tons of information about laundry, policies, maps, and more - not to mention all of the amazing events during Fall Welcome - such as an IKEA trip!

When you received your housing assignment, you should have also received a move in date and time! You can check this by logging back into your myHousing portal at uwm.edu/myhousing. In general, if you are living in Sandburg, your move in date/time will be on August 28th, 29th, or 30th. If you are living in Cambridge, it will be on August 29th or 30th. We ask that you don't show up more than 15 minutes early for your move in time, and no more than 45 minutes late. Summerfest is known as the "World's Largest Music Festival", and it's held right here in Milwaukee! The festival is held along the lakefront at the Henry Maier Festival Park, and runs from June 27th to July 1st, and July 3rd to July 8th, giving you plenty of time to check out all the fun!

At University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, first-year students can either live in the traditional towers at Sandburg (North, South, and West), or at one of our south-campus options, Cambridge Commons.

North, South, and West Towers at Sandburg Residence Hall were built in 1970. The towers are identical in floor/suite layout and house lounges. At Sandburg, residents have the option of a single, double, or triple room. Because of this, each suite will have four to five people, and each suite has its own bathroom, so residents are only sharing with their suitemates, and not their floor. Below are the different floor plans of Sandburg suites.

At Sandburg, there will be 13 LLC's, or Living Learning Communities, where everyone on the floor will have the same major or interest! For the upcoming 2018-2019 year, those LLC's will be: American Sign Language, Architecture II, Business Panthers, Community Engagement & Leadership, Cultures & Communities, Engineering, Health Professions, Honors House, JAMS, Local 2 Global, Performing Arts, Social Welfare, and the Transfer Community. You can read more about LLC's here.

A great thing about UWM is that our cafeterias are in our residence halls! Both Sandburg and Cambridge will have a cafeteria in the building, and both have a Restor (the campus convenience store), laundry, a computer lab, and a 24/7 workout facility. Sandburg also has Flicks (a movie theater), a Grind location (the campus coffee shop), and Palm Gardens as their late night dining option. Sandburg has patios and a sand volleyball court and basketball court, while Cambridge has music practice rooms and a fenced in courtyard.

Cambridge Commons was built in 2010, and is located 1.2 miles south of campus - but don't worry, there's a shuttle that runs every 5-10 minutes! Cambridge has many eco-friendly features (such as its two green roofs), and even has an LEED (Leader in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold Certification. At Cambridge, while each suite still has its own bathroom, there are only double rooms available. However, there is the option between a standard and an upgraded suite. The upgraded suite has a full kitchen, as well as a furnished living area.

Cambridge Commons will have five LLC's for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year: Architecture I, Art & Design, Early Childhood Education, Film, Video, Animation, & New Genres, and Outdoor Recreation.

Both residence halls have such amazing amenities and communities, making either the perfect place for you to call home!Kassidy Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18245946435272231982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-20803755062307947562018-06-06T15:24:00.000-05:002018-06-07T10:49:38.991-05:00Decoding Your Room Assignment Beginning Friday June 8th, room assignments will start going live! Here are some tips to help you understand what everything means.

First, you have to log into your myHousing portal, (uwm.edu/myhousing) using your ePanther ID and password. On the bottom of your page, you can access your room assignment by clicking on the blue hyperlink.

Then, click on your room, and you'll be able to see your roommate(s) and suitemates! The person who has the same letter at the end of their room assignment is your roommate, and the other people are your suitemates. You can then contact your suitemates/roommates via email, to get to know them before move in. You can access any messages you may have by clicking on the link on the left that says My Messages.

To understand your room assignment -

If you are living in Cambridge Commons, your room number will start with CC. If you are living in Sandburg, the letter will correspond with which tower you are in. N is North, E is East, S is South, and W is West. The next one or two numbers would be the floor you live on. The final third and fourth numbers refers to your suite, and the letter at the end is your room within the suite. So, if your room assignment was CC281A, you would be living in Cambridge Commons, on the second floor, in room 281, room A. In the picture below, the assignment is E0130A. So this person's assignment would be East Tower, the 1st floor, suite 130, room A.

If you signed up for an LLC, you can see if you are in it! Go back to your Home Page, and then click the link on the left that says Living Learning Community. If you click it, you can then see what your LLC selection was (if any), and your status.

Finally, please be patient with myHousing! Since this is such an exciting time, there will be a lot of web traffic, and possibly some delays. Also keep in mind that not everyone's room assignment will be released in the first wave, but you will get your assignment soon! As always, feel free to call or email with any questions you have throughout this process!
I’m so excited to welcome all our new first year students to UWM! Move
in starts on August 29th. I remember how excited I was to move out
of my parents’ home and to live on my own. Now that I’ve had a few years of
living in University Housing, I wanted to share some tips and ways to be
involved with you all!

First of all, have you contacted your roommates yet? You can log onto your housing page to find out your room assignment and who your
suitemates are. You can also contact them through the housing page. Don’t be
discouraged if there hasn’t been any communication though. I would personally
suggest looking on social media if you haven’t been able to contact your future
roomies. Have you checked out your class Facebook page? They’re likely a part
of that group too.

Do you have everything you need to live in a Residence Hall?
UWM has a few suggestions for what to bring, and also what NOT to bring. You
can find that here.

Make sure you review UWM’s Move-In Guide before arriving. It
explains policies, privacy, what to do on move-in day, and so much more.

So you’re all moved in. Now what?

Don’t just hang out in your room. This is your time to meet
new people and make new friends. UWM also has a To Do list you can look into for some things you may want to complete right away. Make sure you go to your first floor meeting with your RA.
You get to meet other students living in the same house as well as get to know
your RA.

This year, Panther Academic Welcome (PAW) is on Friday,
September 1st. This is a mandatory event for all first year
students. You will discuss the common read and academics. After that, you get
your class t-shirt, take the class photo, and get free food. It’s also a great
way to meet new people.

UWM has a ton of events planned. Check out your RA’s
postings on your floor. Fall Welcome is packed with welcome events (lots of
them have free food too). If you want a full schedule of those events click
here. My favorite Fall Welcome event is Pantherfest. The artists performing this year are
Kyle, Misterwives, and Kiiara. Be sure to grab your free ticket from August 30th
to September 8th in the Union. Remember you need your PanthercardID!

As you become more familiar with your new home, check out
UWM’s bucket list. There are also over 300 student organizations to get
involved in. If you need some extra spending money you could keep an eye out
for a campus job. You may consider becoming involved with SHAC or the council for your Residence Hall

I’m excited for you to experience UWM. It quickly becomes
home to us. I’ll see you guys around campus!

Hello everybody! My name is Kenzie Hack, and I just wrapped up my First Year here at UWM! I just recently landed the job here at University Housing as a new Outreach Assistant. I'm working over the summer, especially during New Student Orientation (NSO). So incoming first year students, if you see me, don't be shy, say hi! It's been exciting for me to share my passion for UWM's campus with incoming first-year students and get them as pumped for college as I was when I came here.

I was born in Milwaukee, and in my childhood I grew up in suburbs that were Southwest of Milwaukee in Greendale. The rest of my adolescence I grew up near Waukesha, about an hour West of Milwaukee.
After portfolio review during my sophomore year, I will be able to officially announce that I am a Photography major! I'm also going for a minor in Psychology. Before I came to college, my intended major was going to be psych. After I toured our campus here, I fell in love with the facilities Peck School of the Arts has to offer. My first year I was part of an LLC - Living Learning Community- at Cambridge Commons for Art & Design majors. This was one of the best experiences I had because of all the close friendships I made. I also joined and eventually became an Officer of UWM's Focus Photography club on campus. I recommend getting involved in any way you can! I was able to meet so many upper-year students through our club, and although saying goodbye to the seniors was hard, I'm always grateful I had a chance to make those connections.
Getting involved has also given me an opportunity to be a professor's studio assistant, which has been a more than amazing experience. My professor now even has his work up in an exhibition at the Haggerty Museum of Art on Marquette's campus! Helping Mougel create the works was a hectic job, but well worth it after having seen the final product up on the wall. Be sure to check out the show before it closes on September 17th 2017. It includes the work of 5 emerging and established Milwaukee artists who all had
won the Mary L. Nohl award.
After my junior year in high school, I was able to take part in a German foreign exchange that traveled through Germany for a month long trip. I miss my host family every day, along with the lifelong friends I've made during that experience. One thing I'm proud of UWM for is having the Study Abroad program as part of our Center for International Education. Because of the CIE, I don't have to cease my travels.
Another thing I have got to be most proud of UWM for is our accepting LGBTQA+ campus. UWM has been ranked one of the nation's top campuses for LGBTQ+ students, and is currently rated 4.5 stars by Campus Pride as an LGBTQ+ friendly University. Not only is our LGBT+ Resource Center located in the Union a safe space, but now at our University you can apply for a Preferred name. Students can officially be recognized by their preferred name or name-in-use at UWM. University Housing also has Inclusive Housing, where accommodations offer a welcoming space for students who self-select and self-identify as gender non-conforming and students who identify as allies. On top of that, UWM recognizes that students may choose to identify themselves with a gender that differs from the Male/Female designation that appears on government documents, and students are able to submit a Student Gender Identity Request Form. There are also events that are going on in Milwaukee and on campus year-round, such as the LGBT Film Festival, UWM Annual Drag Show, and UWM Pride Discovery Camp.
And last but not least, my favorite thing about UW-Milwaukee is that there's always stuff to do - check out our Bucket List! So most importantly, have fun these couple of years! College is a fresh start and a new, exciting experience.
Because I love Milwaukee, and this job, I decided to stick around instead of going home like everyone else. Milwaukee has lots of fun things to do throughout the summer, so here are a few things I'll be doing during my time off! If you're in town for new student orientation or a campus tour, check some of these things out during your downtime.

1.) Summerfest
if you haven't heard of Summerfest, you're missing out! This huge festival has music from all genres. The tickets are fairly affordable, so I'll be going to a few different days. My favorites on the lineup are, A Day To Remember, DNCE, Bleachers, Jon Bellion, and PVIRS.

Brewers game with friehds

2.) Brewers Games
Are you really a Wisconsinite if you don't love the Brewers? Living a 15 minute drive away from Miller Park is great, and the tickets are fairly cheap, so I'll be sure to see as many Brewers games as possible!

3.) Rooftop Dinners
Since Wisconsin only has a few fleeting months of warmth, I highly suggest taking advantage of the many outdoor dining spaces in Milwaukee. My personal favorite is Benelux, located in the Historic Third Ward. Saturday night dinner with a view of the city? I'll be there!

4.) Beaches
With to beaches nearby, you can catch me having a picnic with friends by the water fairly often. There's a Colectivo Coffee shop right across the street from Bradford Beach, so smoothies and sandy feet are to be expected all summer long. Lake life is the good life!

Beach day with freshman year roommates

5.) NEWaukee Night Market
NEWaukee is the epitome of Milwaukee culture. This is a free market with food, live music, art, and plenty more! This event happens four times throughout the summer, I'll catch at least one, you should too!

6.) Wisconsin State Fair
Confession: I've never been to the state fair. Sounds like a crime, right? Well this year that'll change! Since the state fair grounds are so close by, I'll definitely be going to so bands like For King & Country or Pentatonix!

7.) Mitchell Park Domes
Ever wonder what those three weird domes are when you're driving into the city? Turns out, they're the Mitchell Park Domes that hold some crazy plant life! It's a cheap date idea, entertain the parents idea, or just a fun outing with friends!

8.) Discovery World
Confession #2: I've never been to Discovery World. I hear so many good things about how much fun it is to explore the exhibits, so I have to go check it out myself! I'm sure it'll be a good adventure for a day off.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18142883714052663887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-23831011804126929712017-06-09T11:58:00.001-05:002017-06-09T12:00:06.372-05:002017-2018 Room Assignments: Decoding Tips<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">Hello Panthers!

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">If you are living in Cambridge Commons or Riverview you will see CC or RV as the letters. When you have a space in Sandburg your assignment will start with a letter that corresponds to a tower in the building. North- N, South- S, East-E, West-W. In the example above, the assignment starts with an "E" so you'd be living in East Tower.

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">The next two numbers are the floor you live on. In this case the assignment is E1520D so you'd be living in East Tower on the 15th floor. The third and fourth numbers refer to the suite number you would live in. In some cases the suites have different layouts so you would want to look and see your layout. Finally, the last letter would be the room in the suite. In this case the "D" room.

Hope the studying is going well. Finals week is almost here, but lucky for us the Prowl Line is extending its hours to accommodate students who want more time to study around campus.

Do you know when your finals are scheduled? If you're in a class like BUS ADM 230, your final is at 7:30 on Saturday morning. Don't wait until the last minute to leave, because shuttles fill up quickly with last minute students trying to get to that final. Plan ahead! Professors don't give extra time if you're late. Leave early and make sure you get there.

Also be sure to check out the Prowl Line's summer hours.

Students paying for summer courses + segregated fees will automatically have their UPASS stay activated through August 20th. Online classes don't count, unless it specifically says you're paying the additional fees. You can see this on your PAWS account.

If you're not taking a summer class, your UPASS will deactivate on May 20th. If you would like to keep it activated, you need to visit UWM Transportation Services, located in the UWM Student Union WG25. You will need to pay segregated fees of $22.55 in order to keep your UPASS activated.

So bottom line is, this option is to cover the summer gap. If you were here as a student Spring 2017 and are going to be here as a student Fall 2017, this is for you. If you weren't a student this past semester, or don't plan on being a student this fall, other options are available through MCTS.

Have your summer UPASS figured out? Here are some options you can check out this summer.

Baseball fans: Miller Park is just a bus ride away. Hop on the Goldline at Maryland and Newport, stop #4371 and ride until Wisconsin and N45, stop #492. Then it's a short walk to the stadium. Don't feel like taking the walk? Check out the Brewers Line, available at 20 different Milwaukee stops. There are also routes available from the Blueline or Route 23.

Check out the Milwaukee Public Market. Get on the Greenline at Oakland and Hartford #1400, and get off at Water and St. Paul, #635 and you're right there. If you love food, this is the place to be.

Have you visited the Milwaukee Art Museum yet? The Goldline at Maryland and Newport, stop #4371 takes you down to Prospect and Mason, #4391. A four minute walk then gets you straight to the museum. Admission is free the first Thursday of every month.

Check out Visit Milwaukee for more ideas.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-17400274678391668852017-05-09T11:08:00.000-05:002017-05-09T11:08:03.271-05:00Hi Panthers!

Hi! My name is Jessica. I’m about to complete my second year
here at UWM. I have been an Outreach Assistant at UWM for a few months now, and it’s exciting for me to watch incoming students because they are just beginning
their college experience here as a Panther. I know that they will fall in love with
this school, campus, and community just as I have.
I grew up in a small town called Spring Green, Wisconsin. It
was a unique town, having things such as American Players Theatre, House on theRock, and Taliesin. When I was looking at places to go for college, my one
thought was that I wanted to be in a city, to be the opposite of where I grew
up. Milwaukee has many opportunities in the healthcare field, such as a 4 year
sonography program which is what drew me to apply here. However, my plans
changed and I decided to do a different path of education in preparation for
furthering my education after I complete my bachelor’s degree. I am now working towards a
biomedical sciences degree, with a chemistry minor.

One of my favorite things here at UWM are the opportunities
to become involved on campus. There are so many clubs, jobs, or sports to be a
part of. I am in Chemistry Club and PASA, and if I had time would be involved
in more. If I were to recommend something to an incoming student, it would be
to join a club and meet new people with the same interests as you.
Another favorite thing about UWM is Fall Welcome. There are
so many activities and events planned. I also love living in this city because there are
things to do all the time: new restaurants to try, new places to shop, new parts of the beach to lay on. I definitely feel that UWM is my home and I hope the incoming students will feel the same way!

Hi everyone! My name is Maddie and I'm finishing up my Freshman year at UW-Milwaukee. I started my job as an outreach assistant last fall, and I love it! My favorite part of the job is tabling events like Go Milwaukee, Meet Milwaukee and New Student Orientation. I love talking with prospective and incoming students about any questions or concerns they may have. I have a soft spot for High School kids because I just graduated a year ago, so the memories of senioritis, anxiously planning for freshman year, and the excitement of exploring a new school are still fresh. Anything I can do to help new panthers feel comfortable is my jam.
I was born in Coon Rapids, Minnesota but my family moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin before I even turned one. I graduated from Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH for short), and spent most of my time in choir, band, musicals, or dance classes. Outside of that, I worked at a movie theater for almost three years and grew my love for media. Spending most of my life in the arts eventually led me to applying for a BFA in Dance at UW-Milwaukee's outstanding Peck School of the Arts. When I was little I thought I'd grow up to be a ballerina attending Julliard, but as I got older I realized I preferred post-modern dance and Milwaukee offered a strong post-modern curriculum. So far dancing at UW-Milwaukee's has been an incredible experience. A lot of people ask why I chose Milwaukee over staying home and attending UW-Stevens Point and the answer is simple: the opportunities. The city offers plenty of guest artists, companies, and performances along with being so close to Chicago for bigger auditions. On top of being a Dance major, I'm also majoring in Journalism, Advertisement and Media Studies (JAMS for short) all thanks to my High School job at the movie theater.
A few things I've enjoyed this past year as a freshman have been joining RUF (Reformed University Fellowship), Concert hopping on weekends, exploring the city with friends, and Colectivo. RUF is a Christian student organization I got involved with at the beginning of the year and now attend weekly along with being part of the Ministry Team. I highly recommend getting involved in a student org your first year! Off campus, Milwaukee has plenty of concert venues to explore such as The Rave, The Pabst, Summerfest Grounds, Milwaukee Center for the Performing Arts, etc. Every so often my friends and I will spend the weekend checking out the music from venue to venue. This city offers so much, there's never a boring day. My friends and I will go to Bucks games, Brewers games, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery Museum, Var Art Gallery, and plenty more events around the city. Out of everything here, my favorite spot is by far the coffee shop, Colectivo. There's a few of these scattered around Milwaukee and more often than not you can find me at one with a smoothie in hand, working on assignments or studying for exams.
Over all I've had a great freshman year at UW-Milwaukee. I can't wait to see where the next three years take me, not only as a student but in this position as an Outreach Assistant as well.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18142883714052663887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-28397743923539620392017-05-04T14:22:00.002-05:002017-05-04T14:22:56.138-05:00Move-Out TipsHi Panthers!

My name is Jessica, and I’m a sophomore here at UWM. It’s almost time to move out again! After we get through finals, of course. The end of spring semester can be a little crazy, but I’ve been through it before. Here’s a few tips for anyone who doesn’t know what to expect.

Quick Move-Out Tips:

Don’t leave your cleaning until the last minute. If you are moving out after a final, give yourself some time to clean and stay organized.

If you have a lot of trash, don’t leave it until the day you move out. With everyone cleaning at the same time, trash gets backed up and the last thing you want to be stuck with are multiple garbage bags coming home with you.

Don’t throw away your gently used items. Things like clothes or room décor can be donated to Goodwill.

Don’t schedule your move out time right after your last final. You’ll already be stressed, so give yourself a breather between that test and moving home.

Collaborate with your suitemates about cleaning common areas. Make sure you don’t get stuck with everyone else’s mess.

Remember, the latest you can move out is 24 hours after your last final. Schedule your move out time with your RA sooner rather than later so you get a time that’s convenient to you.

Make sure housing has your forwarding address. Otherwise you might not get your packages when you need them.

Have a great summer break, Panthers!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02208176905396037333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6597441104382394005.post-20670483122744387792016-09-21T11:52:00.000-05:002016-09-21T11:57:47.788-05:00Hey there! mom decided she wanted to live closer to her family. We moved to Sparta, Wisconsin, and I’m proud to say I’ve been a Spartan ever since (and yes we did have a Spartan statue outside our high school). My plan for about seven
years was to major in psychology and eventually get my doctorate, but I changed
my mind while applying for schools to sonography which lead me to UWM.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the last time I changed my mind about my major; I
switched it to Biomedical Sciences in order to pursue the Pre-Physician
Assistant track, then to Global Studies, and finally to Occupational Therapy. I
think I’ve finally found something I want to stick with, and I’ve also decided
to go back to my original plan by getting a psychology minor as well. Fun fact:

taught me how to work under pressure. Security also gave me an understanding of
all University Housing responsibilities while also teaching me all the great

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Hello everyone, my name is Juliana French,
I am a sophomore at UWM, and have been an Outreach Assistant in University
Housings since February. Working as an Outreach Assistant is super exciting, I
love promoting events going on at UWM and giving housing tours to incoming
students.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">On a personal note, I don't have the typical college story as every
other UWM Panther. For starters, I'm not even a native of Wisconsin. My
hometown is about 6 hours away from Milwaukee, in rural Southern
Illinois. Its population is less than 6,000 people, and its area is
approximately a 5 mile drive from one "Welcome to" sign to the
other. Fun fact, my graduating class was only 88 people and I knew every
individuals name.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">I chose UWM for one main reason; the Global Studies program.
Currently, I am on the management track in that major, with French as my
language component. (Tout le monde devriez venir à UWM!) I plan on studying
abroad soon, and other than this summer I’d like to do a volunteer project
abroad every summer until I graduate. After I graduate, I plan to go to
graduate school, and then hopefully become a Public Relations specialist for a
global company. My dream job would be to work as Press Secretary for the White
House.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">Some of my favorite things at UWM are Lyrical Sanctuary, Pantherfest,
and the Grind. As for the city of Milwaukee I’ve gotten to experience and enjoy
Summerfest, the South Side (Me encanta el Supermercado el Rey!), B&B's
(Build-a-Breakfast/Build-a-Burger), Café Hollander, Ians’s, the Basilica of St.
Josaphat, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, Bayshore Town Center, Rochambo,
Colectivo Coffee, and of course, all of the awesome beaches!

I have a long background with University Housing and wanted to give back more to incoming students. Some of the work I have done while living in Housing has been being the Events Coordinator (First Year) and President (Second year) to the Student Housing Administrative Council or SHAC. SHAC is similar to Student Government here on campus and we are established to serve and represent the resident population. We also work to encourage social/academic connections within the Residence Halls.

I am a proud student in the school of Education, with a major of Special Ed and a minor of American Sign Language or ASL. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and with recently becoming Deaf, I have decided to pursue a degree in Special Education. After graduation, the plan is to move to Arizona and teach at a Residential School for the Deaf.

I am excited to work for University Housing as an Outreach Assistant to help show how wonderful the Residence Halls at UW-Milwaukee are. I also hope to be a resource for all current and incoming students and their families.
