Still Time to Self-Assign!

Did you miss the first three Returner Self- Assignment dates?  Don't worry! There is still time to pick your room for next year or modify your current assignment.

Come visit us in the University Housing Office (Sandburg C100) during the following times for your last chance to choose your room for next year:

·      Friday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
·      Friday, April 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
·      Friday, May 2 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you plan on living in University Housing for 2014-2015 it is in your best interest to participate in returner self-assignment because it allows you to take ownership of your room assignment and get to ultimately decide your room and building for the next academic year.

If you do not participate in returner self-assignment, you will be assigned with the general lottery in June.  Please note that availability in certain room types and buildings are limited at this point.  We encourage you to keep an open mind and bring a list of different room types and communities you would be interested in.

You and your preferred roommates/suitemates should attend the make-up appointments together.  This makes it easier to select a different one if the space your group originally wants is not open.

Summer Living Made Easy

Didn't get enough University Housing during the regular school year? Great! We would be happy to provide you with a home for as long as you need during the busy Milwaukee Summer. In order to be eligible for summer housing you will need to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in at least 1 summer course
  • Have a qualified internship
  • Be a UWM student employee

The minimum length of a summer contract is four weeks. When filling out a summer contract you will choose the exact length of your stay. Room rates are very competitive with alternative options in the area and are charged by day. Review the Summer Contract Guidebook for all of the specific details about the summer contract. If you have any questions they can be directed to University Housing in person, by phone (414)229-4065, or by e-mail university-housing@uwm.edu. Once you are familiar with the contract go ahead and fill out the Summer Contract Signature Page to lock in a suite. The priority submission deadline for the first session is May 5th so make sure to get the contract in by then!

This year Restaurant Operations is offering a new and improved summer meal plan option starting at $45 per week! With much lower levels of occupancy during the summer it is not possible to maintain the levels of operation in the cafeteria. Familiarize yourself with the Summer Meal Plan Options and when ready, PRINT and fill out the Summer Meal Plan Contract then turn it in to the University Housing office, C100 located in the Sandburg lobby.

REMEMBER: Priority deadline for the first summer session is May 5th!!

Future Panthers,

As more of you are continue to fill out your housing contracts, I am sure you are asking my favorite question!

"What should I bring when I move into the residence halls?"

In my personal opinion, less is always more! You don't need to bring all of you belongings during move-in. Getting Your Contract In

Future Panthers, please note that the priority deadline to turn in your 2014-2015 University Housing Contract is May 1. This date is four weeks away, so circle it on your calendar and submit your contract on time!

Remember there are six room types available to first year students:
  1. Cambridge Commons Double
  2. Cambridge Commons Double Upgrade
  3. RiverView Double
  4. Traditional Sandburg Single
  5. Traditional Sandburg Double
  6. Traditional Sandburg Triple
You need to indicate your top three room preferences on the online contract so that after the May 1 deadline you can be assigned to your building, suite, and room through a randomized lottery system that will look at which type of room you would prefer. If you do not get your contract in by May 1 you can still apply for University Housing, however, you will be placed in another lottery at the beginning of summer.

Other parts of the contract that are important to take a look at:
  • Living Learning Communities are floors where residents and their Resident Assistant all share a common major or interest so residents can make connections in the classroom and bring that network back to the residence halls. For more information visit the LLC Website.
  • Inclusive Housing offers an inviting, welcoming space for students who self-select and self-identify as gender non-conforming or who have other cultural or identity considerations related to living in the residence halls at UW-Milwaukee and students who identify as allies. University Housing will have some suites where students may request any roommate without regard to gender identity or physical sex. Students interested in Inclusive Housing should contact University Housing or the LGBT Resource Center, or email inclusive-housing@uwm.edu.
  • Roommate Assignment is based off of a personal habit quiz that will assess your living and study habits to ensure a good match between randomized roommates. If you already have a roommate in mind, make sure you put each others' Student ID Numbers in the preferred roommate section of the contract. If you need to share your UWM ID number with your preferred roommate so they can request you, your number can be found at the top of the myHousing page, once you've logged in.
  • Meal Plan fees are separate from University Housing, but can be found on the same contract. Just pick one of three levels so that at the beginning of the semester you try out the food available through Restaurant Operations.
There will also be a $100 pre-payment/deposit required after you submit your contract. If you change your mind about living in University Housing prior to June 1, part of this fee will be refunded to you.

This is a lot of information to process, so if you have any questions feel free to ask!

A New Addition to the Outreach Team

Hello there!

Not only am I the one and only Kenlei Cowell, but I am also the newest addition to the University Housing Outreach team! I am so excited to work with the University Housing family because this community is a wonderful place to have fun, eat great food, and work on my professional development.

This is my third year at UW-Milwaukee, as well as my third year living in Sandburg Residence Hall. I lived in the Honors LLC my freshman year, and have stuck around to live in East Tower upperclassmen housing for the past two years. The diverse atmosphere in University Housing has enabled me foster my social life and my academics towards both my Public Relations degree and my Chinese  degree. In fact, I find this community so beneficial towards my college career, that I will stay in the halls my senior year as well!

Other than being a University Housing enthusiast, I enjoy reading, running, dancing like a crazy person, and of course getting involved on the UWM campus. I am the current President of the Student Housing Administrative Council, a campus tour guide, and a high school forensics judge.

I can't wait to meet the incoming and returning Panthers and help them develop their Pounce Pride!
