UWM Year of the Arts

"In the 2012-13 academic year (July 2012-June 2013), UWM will celebrate the Year of the Arts through a series of events, programs and activities taking place on campus and in collaboration with a wide-variety of community partners. The Year of the Arts will recognize the 50th anniversary of the Peck School of the Arts, its influence in the Wisconsin arts community, and the impact that the arts has in every discipline."  PSOA

Being an art student myself (film) this is a really exciting year for UWM to have. It will bring our community to life more than ever and really embrace the creative differences in all of us! As art comes in every size, shape, and form, it allows each of us the unique opportunity to express ourselves in countless ways. To start, the University will be working towards showing appreciation to the arts in how the arts contribute to all the different fields of study both in and out of the classroom, teaching the community to understand art in our everyday lives and appreciate its influence, and encouraging students to be creative and look at how they can use art to shape their experience to learn and grow.

The Year of the Arts is embracing the art community in countless ways. One of the biggest ways is the University-wide book read of the graphic novel Persepolis that all first year students will be reading. Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi depicting her childhood through early adulthood in Iran after the Islamic Revolution. The book illustrates the cultural differences and influences on her growing up and the challenges it presented and the possible consequences for stepping outside the cultural norms.

The year will also bring to campus a variety of guests from the art world through the guest speakers series, the numerous art conferences being hosted at UWM, and the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival as it celebrates its 25th anniversary here at UWM. Not to mention, the world of student work that will be inspired, created, performed, and showcased around campus. This year will be one our community will not forget.  I am excited to see what is to come and how our school will come alive in new ways through the arts.
