Hey there! I'm Rachel

My roommates and I after a messy twister game <3
Hey everyone, my name is Rachel Knibbs, and I just started my sophomore year here at UWM! I’m a new Outreach Assistant starting this semester, and so far my favorite part is meeting and talking with the (hopefully) future Panthers while giving them tours. I love seeing the enthusiasm some families have for their student finally getting ready to experience college.

Originally I lived in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, but my mom decided she wanted to live closer to her family. We moved to Sparta, Wisconsin, and I’m proud to say I’ve been a Spartan ever since (and yes we did have a Spartan statue outside our high school). My plan for about seven years was to major in psychology and eventually get my doctorate, but I changed my mind while applying for schools to sonography which lead me to UWM. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the last time I changed my mind about my major; I switched it to Biomedical Sciences in order to pursue the Pre-Physician Assistant track, then to Global Studies, and finally to Occupational Therapy. I think I’ve finally found something I want to stick with, and I’ve also decided to go back to my original plan by getting a psychology minor as well. Fun fact: everyone in my household is currently going to college. My older brother, after he finished his service in the Navy, decided he wanted to become a history teacher, my mom is going back to school for Nursing, and I’m going for Occupational Therapy.

Someone was kind enough to bake me a cake
for my birthday shift in Cambridge
While trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life my first year, I was also working at the Cambridge Commons Service Desk. Working security helped me build my confidence, conflict skills, and taught me how to work under pressure. Security also gave me an understanding of all University Housing responsibilities while also teaching me all the great resources we have here on campus. Every now and then I find myself missing the job and the great people worked with, but I’m excited to see where being an Outreach Assistant takes me! If you see me around campus, feel free to say hi!

Bonjour! C'est Juliana!

Hello everyone, my name is Juliana French, I am a sophomore at UWM, and have been an Outreach Assistant in University Housings since February. Working as an Outreach Assistant is super exciting, I love promoting events going on at UWM and giving housing tours to incoming students.

On a personal note, I don't have the typical college story as every other UWM Panther. For starters, I'm not even a native of Wisconsin. My hometown is about 6 hours away from Milwaukee, in rural Southern Illinois. Its population is less than 6,000 people, and its area is approximately a 5 mile drive from one "Welcome to" sign to the other. Fun fact, my graduating class was only 88 people and I knew every individuals name.

Volunteering at International Folk Fair
I chose UWM for one main reason; the Global Studies program. Currently, I am on the management track in that major, with French as my language component. (Tout le monde devriez venir à UWM!) I plan on studying abroad soon, and other than this summer I’d like to do a volunteer project abroad every summer until I graduate. After I graduate, I plan to go to graduate school, and then hopefully become a Public Relations specialist for a global company. My dream job would be to work as Press Secretary for the White House.

Some of my favorite things at UWM are Lyrical Sanctuary, Pantherfest, and the Grind. As for the city of Milwaukee I’ve gotten to experience and enjoy Summerfest, the South Side (Me encanta el Supermercado el Rey!), B&B's (Build-a-Breakfast/Build-a-Burger), Café Hollander, Ians’s, the Basilica of St. Josaphat, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, Bayshore Town Center, Rochambo, Colectivo Coffee, and of course, all of the awesome beaches!

Overall, I am delighted to be an Outreach Assistant and a representative of UWM! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at uhmktg@uwm.edu.

P.S. I hardly ever take photos, so most of these are from over a year ago!

Aloha!

Hey everyone - I'm Sabrina and I just recently starting working as an Outreach Assistant for University Housing. I have a long background with University Housing and wanted to give back more to incoming students. Some of the work I have done while living in Housing has been being the Events Coordinator (First Year) and President (Second year) to the Student Housing Administrative Council or SHAC. SHAC is similar to Student Government here on campus and we are established to serve and represent the resident population. We also work to encourage social/academic connections within the Residence Halls.

I am a proud student in the school of Education, with a major of Special Ed and a minor of American Sign Language or ASL. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and with recently becoming Deaf, I have decided to pursue a degree in Special Education. After graduation, the plan is to move to Arizona and teach at a Residential School for the Deaf.

I am excited to work for University Housing as an Outreach Assistant to help show how wonderful the Residence Halls at UW-Milwaukee are. I also hope to be a resource for all current and incoming students and their families.

Being a proud UW-Milwaukee student, it is my goal to complete the UWM 56 Bucket List before I graduate. #4 - Get a picture with Pounce. This was taken at the University's Panther Pause - an event during study day to distress before finals.

#5 on the UWM Bucket List is to join one of our 300+ Student Organizations on campus and #21 is to grab a slice of pizza at Ian's Pizza downtown. This picture was taken during training with my fellow SHAC Executive Board. Ian's is a great place to grab a slice of pizza and relax with some friends.

Decode Your Room Assignment

It's happening! It's that time of year again...and you have your room assignment. It can be so exciting to see what building you are in and who you are living with. Did you pick an LLC? Are you living in Cambridge or RiverView? Or in one of the Towers of Sandburg? With all this does come some confusion. Here are some tips for figuring out what your assignment is and what it all means.

Step 1: Log onto your my housing webpage. (www.uwm.edu/housing/myhousing) This uses your ePantherID and Password. Once you are logged in scroll towards the bottom of the page to see your assignment.
This room is in blue as a hyper link that you can click on.

Step 2: Click on your room and another page will also pop up with your suitemates/roommates listed on the page as well. The person with the same letter at the end of their room assignment is your roommate. Everyone else is a suitemate.

If you are living in Cambridge Commons or Riverview you will see CC or RV as the letters. When you have a space in Sandburg your assignment will start with a letter that corresponds to a tower in the building. North- N, South- S, East-E, West-W.  In the example above, the assignment starts with an "E" so you'd be living in East Tower.

The next two numbers are the floor you live on. In this case the assignment is E1520D so you'd be living in East Tower on the 15th floor. The third and fourth numbers refer to the suite number you would live in. In some cases the suites have different layouts so you would want to look and see your layout. Finally, the last letter would be the room in the suite. In this case the "D" room.

Step 3: See if you are in your LLC! Depending on your floor check the list below to see if you got into that awesome LLC; or check out some of the suite layouts, measurements, and some more in depth info about your hall/tower!

Cambridge Commons LLCs-

  • Local to Global (L2G) CC329-CC342
  • Art & Design CC405-CC417
  • Architecture Sustainability 6th Floor
West Tower LLCs-
  • American Sign Language Floor 2
  • Music Community Floors 5&6
  • Dance Foundations Floor 6
  • Social Justice Floor 13
  • Honors House Floors 15&16
South Tower LLCs-
  • Business Panthers Floors 1-5
  • Engineering House Floors 9-11
  • Transfer Floors 17-20
North Tower LLCs-
  • Health Professions Floors 5&6
  • Education and Leadership Floor 22
  • The CQ: Career Quest Floors 23&24
Riverview LLCs-
  • Film,Video & New Genres Floor 7
  • U1.0: I'm First RV201-RV206
East Tower LLCs-
  • Architecture Design Floor 16
  • Honors House 2 Floor 17
Please remember to be patient when working with myhousing and the UWM Housing website. There will be a lot of web traffic and some possible delays. Also keep in mind that not everyone finds out their assignments in the first wave but be patient -- it's coming! We are working hard to get your assignment to you. As usual, feel free to call us with any comments or questions.

Fun in the Sun...but First, Finals

    May is hard month for some of our students. As finals get closer and the school year starts to wrap up, many students find it becomes hard to focus. Luckily both on campus and in housing we have some awesome upcoming events and study tips. Here are some of my personal study tips to help make it through finals week;

1) Try to eat healthy as much as possible
It can be easy to grab junk food but sticking to small treats and healthier foods helps your brain and body work with you to study.

2) Take smaller breaks and get away from the books
Finals do mean a lot in college but you also need to take time to let some of that information sink in. Take a quick power nap, a walk or just take a social media break.

3) Sleep.
Get some rest and make sure you let your body recharge. Starting fresh and ready before studying and a final is never a bad idea.

We also have some fun events like our campus relaxation event that happens every year with oxygen bars, massage chairs and more. Here in housing we have a Spa Night event and lots of other events throughout the building. Keep an eye out for those coming soon.

Good Luck ,
Annabelle

Time to Self-Assign...and more!

It's that  time of year again, Returner Self-Assignment time! Our residents get the chance to pick where they will live for the next year. It may sound like the hunger games of rooms, but there are always a lot of happy faces as well. With so many awesome res halls to choose from, it's always a fun and exciting experience.

We also have some other events happening this week in Sandburg, Check them out below!

Wednesday March 2nd we have the Sex and Law program in Flicks. This program takes a look at some of the issues surrounding our laws and sex. Featuring the Women's Resource Center, UWM Police Department, Norris Health Center and more..this event seems like a no brainer for some fun. They have answers to all your questions and will also feature appetizers and a guest speaker.

Finally, the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) here at UW-Milwaukee is hosting Spread the Word to End the Word day right outside of Flicks and the Green Room. Wednesday night 7-9pm, stop by and take the pledge to end the use of the r-word. Sign your name on the banner and head to one of our other events happening a few steps away.
Hope to see you all there!

All About Annabelle

Hi Everyone!
My name is Annabelle and I am one of the three new Outreach Assistants here at UW-Milwaukee within the housing office. I am so excited to interact with students and residents in a new way.

Currently, I am a Resident Assistant in Sandburg's North Tower in the Education and Leadership LLC. This is my second year as an RA and I have loved having a community of fun residents to help as they understand and get to know what college is all about. Last year I was an RA in East Tower so I have experienced a variety of the residence halls here on campus.

I am currently a Senior majoring in Public Relations and will be graduating with a degree in Journalism, Advertising, Media Studies with a focus in PR. I am also Pre-Law and will be going to law school once I graduate. I am hoping to go into advocacy law to advocate specifically for those with disabilities. I am very passionate about law and am excited to head towards Law School in the near future! I am also a member of a sorority here on campus and love my experience with it! (Shout out to my Gamma Phi's)

I grew up in Austin, Texas and  really enjoyed my time living in Austin and especially loved all the good BBQ, Tex-Mex and Mexican food. I definitely consider myself a foodie and of course I can't forget my Sweet Tea obsession. Overall, I enjoy reading, crafting, watching movies with friends, baking and spending time with my family. I am so excited to be starting as an Outreach Assistant and can't wait to see what the future brings.I have also included some pictures below!

This is a picture of myself, my sister, and my brother.

This is my sweet six year old dog Brenna...isn't she adorable?

Finally, here is a picture of myself and the Housing Council President at the awards banquet.

Hey, its Keara!

Who's excited to be one of the new UWM Housing Outreach Assistants?? I definitely am! My name is Keara (Pronounced like my girl Shakira but without the Sha).

I have so much Panther Pride that I not only love to show off housing as an Outreach Assistant but I am also currently a Campus Ambassador. That basically means I am a tour guide for the whole UWM campus. I love my jobs! I get to help perceptive students understand how fantastic UWM really is. Now by having both jobs I get to be extra #patherproud to our #futureuwmpanthers!!

A little about what I'm studying! I am a sophomore studying Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies-emphasis in Advertising, and also Art and Design Photography. What I hope to do with this degree is become a commercial or fashion/editorial photographer. I love being behind a camera and the world of advertising is beyond interesting to me! I hope to study abroad next year to Paris, France or Florence, Italy and be immersed in the art and fashion culture there!

Speaking of traveling...FUN FACT! I have been to 47 states (I just need Alaska, Texas and Idaho and then I'll be at the big 5 0!) I love to travel, its a big passion of mine. Another passion of mine is FOOD. Some things I miss about Sandburg is Waffle Weekends and Chinese days in the cafeteria, not to mention the chicken ceasar wrap and milkshakes at palms(slowly dying of nostalgia). I also love to be outdoors and recently have started to like working out...I know, it's as unfortunate as it sounds. I also am attempting to learn guitar. But most importantly, my favorite animal is a kangaroo but my spirit animal is an otter.

I cannot wait to get started with my Outreach Assistant job! College is all about getting involved and trying new experiences and this is one that I'm eager to jump into head first! If you have any questions for me email me at uhmktg@uwm.edu!

Thanks:)
