Public Conduct

This past weekend I attended what may be my last Pantherfest. I can proudly say that I have attended every Pantherfest in my four years here. While I have enjoyed the bands and find it awesome that the school puts on a free concert for students and it is usually a pretty big name (I seem to hear Kid Cudi everywhere right now) I find the actions of the students at this event appalling. I know most students that were there enjoyed the music and had a great time with their friends however there were those people who actually booed the opening act Shiny Toy Guns. Now their music is not everyone's preference it still takes a lot to get up on a stage and perform. Not everyone can do that. Also there were some people there to actually listen to Shiny Toy Guns and yet couldn't over the cries for Kid Cudi. I found it very disrespectful of us as students to behave this way, it also does no represent us well as a University when we boo a band that didn't have to even come and perform at our school. We are adults now and I think it is time for us to act as such. This post isn't about every student far from it, but it is time to recognize that at some point we all need to present some maturity in situations. Hopefully next year more people will be open minded to the other bands at Pantherfest and respectful of fellow concert goers.

  1. I agree. I was appauled that there were people who would be so rude as to boo someone. If you don't like them, you certainly don't have to cheer. But that was very disrespectful.

  2. I disagree. It's the band's job to entertain the crowd or group whom it's performing for. As a musician, when I'm performing for a crowd I know that I should do everything possible to make the most amount of people happy. If I do an awful job and fail to perform, they have every right in the world to boo. Obviously if there was booing, Shiny Toy Guns wasn't doing their job. Shiny Toy Guns was being paid for this gig, it's not like they're a group at the open mic.

As for the band's opinion, they should not be bothered by this. They've played worse gigs and have probably been heckled by more then a couple UWM students. If they got upset over minimal pressure, then the band would have broken down years ago.

  3. i agree, during the concert all i heard was kid cudi being chanted, now that i feel was very disrespectful to shiny toy guns. I wonder if those who booed them as soon as they came on stage actually thought how it must have felt for them to get up on stage and be booed the second it started? I completely agree with this post, whitney, and i was waiting for someone to bring it up because i knew someone had to, because it was such a bad impression on the student body, and the university.

  4. Pantherfest will never satisfy the entire population. One group will be there for one act, another for the other. I didn't even go due to not being in to either act. I've seen Shiny Toy Guns before, three years ago, and they were terrible. My roommate said that they were terrible. In my opinion UWM dropped the ball by getting them. Get a band that people actually pay attention to. Not one that covers a mediocre 80s song for a car commercial.
